Notre Dame and SoFi Launch Landmark Multi-Year Partnership
Notre Dame Athletics has entered a new era of college sports business, announcing a multi-year partnership with SoFi Technologies that makes the fintech company the university's official financial services partner and puts a corporate logo on a Fighting Irish jersey for the first time in program history.
The deal, announced July 28, 2026, is reportedly worth $18 to $20 million annually over six years, making it the largest jersey patch agreement in college sports. But framed by Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua, the partnership is about far more than a patch on a sleeve. It's a long-term investment in the athletes who wear the uniform.
A Deal Built Around "4 for Forever"
At the center of the announcement is Notre Dame's "4 for Forever" promise, the department's pledge to support athletes not just during their playing days but well beyond graduation. According to Bevacqua, that mission is exactly what made SoFi the right partner.
"Our '4 for Forever' promise at Notre Dame is paramount to providing the best student-athlete experience in the country," Bevacqua said. "SoFi shares in this commitment to developing strong, ambitious leaders who are set up for success at Notre Dame and beyond. Together, our relationship will create lasting value for our student-athletes and their families for generations to come."
SoFi CEO Anthony Noto echoed that sentiment, drawing a direct line between the company's customer base and Notre Dame's athletes.
"Notre Dame has spent generations developing champions in the classroom and on the field," Noto said. "The grit, discipline and determination of Notre Dame's student-athletes reflect the same ambition we see in our members every day. We are proud to partner with Notre Dame Athletics to help inspire the next generation and create opportunities that will shape their financial futures."
What Athletes Actually Get
The partnership isn't just a branding exercise. It comes with concrete new resources for Notre Dame's roughly 750 student-athletes across 26 varsity programs:
SoFi Champions Scholarship: A new scholarship program specifically for walk-on athletes. Each year, one male and one female walk-on who exemplify ambition, resilience, leadership and service will each receive a full-tuition scholarship for one year.
Student-Athlete Services Hub: SoFi will bring its financial education tools, planning resources, personalized guidance and products directly to athletes, giving them practical help managing money while in school and preparing for life after Notre Dame.
An annual fund, tied directly to the "4 for Forever" promise, supporting scholarships, financial education, career development and other opportunities across every Notre Dame sport, not just football.
For athletes in Olympic sports (fencing, rowing, lacrosse, swimming) who don't have access to the same NIL earning potential as football players, that financial literacy support and scholarship access could matter just as much as the headline dollar figure.
Why This Helps Recruiting
The timing and structure of the deal also send a message to recruits and their families. Notre Dame has long marketed itself as a program that develops the "whole person," academically, athletically and professionally, rather than just a football factory. This partnership gives that pitch financial teeth.
A few ways it strengthens Notre Dame's hand on the recruiting trail:
Tangible post-career value. Recruits and parents increasingly weigh what a program offers beyond eligibility. A structured financial-planning resource, run by a $20 billion-plus fintech company, is a differentiator most athletic departments can't match.
Support for non-revenue sports. Because the deal spans all 26 varsity programs rather than just football, it reinforces Notre Dame's pitch to recruits in sports like hockey, soccer and track that they're not an afterthought in the department's investment.
Protecting walk-on culture. The SoFi Champions Scholarship specifically elevates walk-ons, a group central to Notre Dame's program identity (see: "Rudy"), signaling to preferred walk-ons that there's a real path to being recognized and rewarded.
Financial firepower for NIL competition. In an era where roster retention is often about money, an $18 to $20 million annual infusion strengthens Notre Dame's overall athletic budget, freeing up resources that can indirectly support NIL collectives and facilities in a hyper-competitive market.
Preserving What Makes Notre Dame Different
Notably, the university drew a clear line: Notre Dame Stadium itself will remain free of in-stadium corporate advertising, keeping the game-day atmosphere intact even as the uniform itself changes. The SoFi logo appears only as a patch on Fighting Irish uniforms across sports (the first non-apparel brand ever to do so), rather than as signage inside the stadium.
Notre Dame Global Partnerships (NDGP), a joint venture between Legends Global and JMI Sports, brokered the agreement on behalf of the athletic department.
For a program that has resisted this kind of commercialization longer than almost anyone in college sports, the SoFi deal is a signal. Notre Dame is willing to modernize its revenue strategy, but only in a way that's still wrapped in its own institutional identity: student-athlete development, academic success and a program history that includes 39 national championships and one of the best graduation rates in the country.
